In May, more than 100 million people were displaced worldwide as a result of persecution, conflict, violence or human rights violations, according to a report released Thursday by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

By the end of 2021, 89.3 million people had been displaced and displaced, according to UNHCR’s Global Trends Report, eight percent more than in the previous year and more than twice as many as a decade ago.

Russian invasion of Ukraine exploded numbers

internally displaced persons
More than half of them – 53.2 million – are internally displaced persons, ie internally displaced persons (IDP). Their number increased by 5.2 million compared to 2020. According to the UNHCR, this increase is due to increasing violence in several countries, for example in Myanmar.

The conflict in the Ethiopian region of Tigray and other areas has also led to millions of people fleeing into the country. Rebellions in the Sahel led to new internal displacements, especially in Burkina Faso and Chad.

Turkey takes in most refugees
The vast majority of refugees and displaced persons (83 percent) found shelter in low- and middle-income countries. More than a quarter (27 percent) were even accepted by the least developed countries (LLDCs). No country has received as many refugees as Turkey (nearly 3.8 million), followed by Uganda (1.5 million), Pakistan (1.5 million) and Germany (1.3 million). Colombia received 1.8 million Venezuelans who had fled abroad. Lebanon has taken in the most refugees per inhabitant.

Syria remains the top country of origin
