The emergency services can’t calm down! Heavy thunderstorms also hit Lower Austria on Monday night. The region around Hollabrunn was particularly affected again: the disaster area was flooded again.
The amount of rain on Sunday evening was no longer as exorbitant as on Friday. “But even 30 millimeters of rain was too much for the completely soaked ground,” reports a spokesman for the district fire department Hollabrunn. The railway line to Vienna had to be closed again. Streets and buildings were flooded again, and numerous large pumps and various smaller devices were running at full speed all night long.
1000 firefighters in service
And the volunteers also worked to the point of exhaustion: “A total of around 1,000 members have been deployed since Friday,” says district fire chief Alois Zaussinger, who makes an initial assessment: “Some have been deployed all three days and have worked to the limits of their strength.”
Bach once again overstepped his bounds
The Runzenbach near Hollabrunn burst its banks again, says Stefan Obritzhauser, commander of the Hohenwarth fire brigade. Just like on Friday, water had to be pumped out at a disabled facility, and a horse farm and a tennis hall were also hit for the second time this weekend.
Branch fell on house
Heavy storms also caused fire brigade operations in the region around the capital on Sunday evening: in Maria Jeutendorf near Böheimkirchen, for example, a large branch fell on a multi-storey building. It threatened to slide and block the road next to it. However, with the help of the crane vehicle of the St. Pölten fire brigade, the emergency services were able to prevent this.
