A forestry worker dies in Iurreta when a branch hits his head

Date:

The number of deaths at work this year stands at 36 in Hego Euskal Herria, as reported by the LAB union.

A self-employed worker carrying out forestry work died on 14 August in Iurreta when a branch fell on him and hit him hard on the head. According to the LAB union, which reported this new fatal accident at work, the number of deaths at work in Hego Euskal Herria since the beginning of the year has risen to 36 due to the death of this worker.

LAB has “strongly” denounced this new death and expressed its “support and solidarity” to the employee’s family and friends.

In a note on its website, the union assures that in the forestry sector “the risks are great” due to working “with dangerous machinery, on steep terrain and in bad weather”, adding “the working conditions are increasingly insecure”. For this reason, the LAB has asked for an investigation into the causes of death of the worker “as well as his working conditions and work rhythms”, because “those responsible must be identified”. Likewise, the LAB denounces that “the increase in the number of occupational accidents is a consequence of the policy of insecurity and the lack of control by the institutions in the field of occupational health” and considers that “by taking the necessary measures to prevent occupational risks, and if the jobs created are of good quality, the number of occupational accidents should not increase”. In this sense, it has demanded that institutions and governments “stop looking the other way”.
