Setback for Moscow – Ukrainians destroy last bridge in Kursk region

Date:

In the Russian region of Kursk, the last bridge in a key sector of the front has apparently been destroyed by the Ukrainian army. This makes it much more difficult to supply Moscow’s troops.

Ukraine has achieved new success in the Kursk offensive, which has kept the Russian army on edge for two weeks. “The enemy has destroyed the last stationary bridge over the Seim River in the city of Karish,” Russian war correspondent Yuri Podolyak said on Telegram. A representative of the Russian Investigative Committee reported, according to the Reuters news agency: “On August 18, a third bridge over the Seim River was damaged by targeted shelling of residential buildings and civilian infrastructure in the village of Karyzh with rocket and artillery weapons.”

This post shows a map of the region with the locations of the three destroyed bridges:

Russian cities are now cut off from the rest of the area
Kursk Governor Alexei Smirnov reported Friday that a strategically important road bridge was attacked by an American Himars rocket launcher and then destroyed by a glide bomb attack. Dozens of towns in the border region were cut off from the rest of the area.

On Sunday, it was reported that another bridge had been destroyed the day before: the structure near the village of Zvannoe, which was used to evacuate civilians, had been hit. A bitter blow for Moscow: the supply capacity of the Russian troops trying to repel the attack was limited, a commander of the Ukrainian air force explained.

Russia is in danger of being surrounded by troops
The third and final bridge over the Seim is now out of service. This makes the transport of heavy military equipment increasingly difficult – and also the transfer of Russian soldiers to the disputed area. The situation for Moscow is becoming increasingly delicate: “If the Russian soldiers do not leave, they will be surrounded. If they move, they will leave a large area without protection,” said military observer Jan Matveyev.

With the Kursk offensive, which has been going on for two weeks, Ukraine has for the first time shifted the war against the Russian invasion to enemy territory. It is also the first time since World War II that foreign troops are on Russian territory. Nevertheless, the Russian army and security authorities are slow to defend themselves.

Heavy shelling also on Ukrainian areas
The Ukrainian defenders continue to face heavy pressure on their own territory. The General Staff in Kiev reported 145 Russian attacks along the front on Sunday. Of these, 45 attacks were directed against the Pokrovsk sector of the front in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine. These figures cannot be verified in detail, but they give an indication of the intensity of the fighting.

According to its own information, the Ukrainian Air Force repelled all eleven combat drones that attacked the Russian army during the night. The Russian Defense Ministry, in turn, reported that several Ukrainian drones had been shot down.
