A group of Czechs wanted to climb the 3,657-meter-high Großvenediger on the border of East Tyrol and Salzburg on Monday. But bad weather forced the mountaineers to cancel their trip. The return trip, however, did not go as planned.
It was shortly after noon when the Czechs broke off their trek through the high alpine terrain and wanted to return to the Defreggerhaus near Prägraten.
Shortly before 3 p.m., the group was crossing crevasses at about 10,000 feet above sea level. Then it happened.
Injured while jumping over a hole
A 28-year-old jumped over a crevasse and injured her left knee. There was no way to continue. So her companions called the emergency number.
The injured person had to be rescued by emergency helicopter and taken to Lienz Hospital.
