Video: By boat through the algae nightmare in the Adriatic Sea

Date:

The slime is disgusting for holidaymakers and is ruining tourism on the Adriatic. September should save the season. Plans are in place. A video – see above – and satellite images show the extent of the algae carpet in northern Italy.

It should have been a beautiful summer on the Adriatic, but now the season is in danger of ending in a slimy disaster. The dreaded Mucillagini, a stinking algae slime, has a firm grip on the coast near Rimini and is driving away holidaymakers en masse.

“Our hotels are empty”
“We are shocked,” admits Marco Filippetti, president of the Hoteliers of Pesaro. “People are fleeing the disgusting slime, our hotels are empty!” Satellite images show the extent of the algae carpet: white-green stripes run like a carpet across the Adriatic Sea. An image that is endangering the good reputation of the holiday paradise.

Similar to Edo Varini’s video. The avid fisherman experienced the slime nightmare first-hand while on a boat trip along the coast of Rimini with friends. “Che schifo!” he shouts in the video (“How disgusting!”). He describes the smell as “unbearable!”

In Rimini, possible solutions are being discussed desperately. In addition to the enormous expansion of pools on beaches, there is also thought of creating artificial waves to drive the slime from beaches to the open sea. But time is running out.

“We must act immediately, otherwise the reputation of our coast will be ruined forever,” Filippetti warns.

In fact, the region faces a challenge that will extend well beyond the summer. One thing is clear: the algae could become a permanent problem – and thus the biggest threat to the Adriatic’s tourism sector.

Hoteliers are currently hoping for storms. “Maybe the rain will finally wash away all the slime,” says Filippetti. “Otherwise we have no choice but to pray.”
