Mountaineering legend Reinhold Messner looks with amusement at the trend towards outdoor clothing in the inner cities. “People in the pedestrian zone are dressed as if they want to climb Everest the next day,” said the 79-year-old in his Juval castle near Merano in South Tyrol.
When asked if he felt guilty about possibly contributing to the trend, he replied, “No, I don’t.”
Mountaineering legend often wears outdoor clothing
Messner went on to say that he himself wears a lot of functional clothing, but for practical reasons, not fashion considerations. The world’s most famous mountaineer turns 80 next month.
Messner was the first person to stand on the summit of all fourteen eight-thousanders, including the highest mountain, Mount Everest. The Italian has an advertising contract with a company that sells outdoor clothing.
