Prisoners have taken hostages and killed at least one guard at a Russian prison camp, during a meeting of a disciplinary committee, the camp administration in the Volgograd region said Friday.
At least two attackers are believed to have been involved. One of them said they were fighters from the terrorist organization Islamic State. They had taken control of the Russian camp, he said. A video shows guards lying in pools of blood. One apparently had his throat cut. Another man sits upright by a door, an attacker holding a knife to his neck. Other images show a prison officer with his face covered in blood and his hands tied behind his back.

Requirements initially unclear
“While a disciplinary committee was meeting, convicts took guards hostage,” the camp administration said Friday. There were casualties. The demands of the hostage-takers were initially unclear. One man said it was done without mercy. The action is a response to the mistreatment of Muslim prisoners in the camp. According to media reports, the attackers come from Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
Russian security forces were eventually able to end the hostage-taking on the same day. The prison camp was stormed and at least one hostage-taker was killed. During the operation, all hostages were released, it was said.
The number of attacks in Russia is increasing
The Russian security and intelligence services are currently focusing on the war in Ukraine. Recently, there have been more and more attacks with an Islamist background in the country. In March, for example, the Islamic State claimed responsibility for the massacre in a concert hall in Moscow. At least 140 people were killed.
The affected penal colony is located in the town of Surovikino. About 1,200 men are imprisoned there.
