Giraffe “Samira” began to give birth in the presence of numerous visitors. The experienced mother behaved calmly and relaxed at the Schmiding Zoo in Krenglbach. Since the birth, which was followed by a camera, was already expected, the baby fell gently into enough straw.
Giraffe bull and father “Noel” were there in the next box when his youngest offspring were born, sending loving, reassuring signals to the expectant mother. The team from Schmidinger Zoo supervised the birth.
“The entire birth process went smoothly and without human intervention,” reports zoo director Andreas Artmann. Everything happened very quickly.
The birth went so fast
At 13:30, ‘Samira’s waters’ broke, and shortly after, the tips of her hooves became visible. The legs were already born at 14:06, the cub came to life at 14:30. Only 20 minutes later, she was able to lift her head and sit up on her own, and after another 40 minutes, she was finally able to stand on her own, albeit unsteadily. And at the age of 17, the cub found its mother’s teats and drank for the first time.
Rapid development
Mother “Samira” was very caring from the very first moment, licking the young animal and checking him regularly. “It is impressive how quickly a giraffe calf develops shortly after birth. This ability is necessary in nature to leave the birthplace as quickly as possible and to be protected from predators,” says Andreas Artmann.
There are only 1,400 giraffes of this species left in the wild
The birth of new giraffes at Schmiding Zoo is also an important success for species conservation, especially when you consider that there are only 1,400 adult Rothschild giraffes left in their natural habitat.
Open to visitors
Mother and child can also be visited in the giraffe enclosure. However, there are always times when the area is closed to visitors, so that mother and child can recover. Incidentally, the name of the little giraffe bull has not yet been decided.
