A violent explosion has occurred in the Afghan capital Kabul and a suicide bomber is said to have blown himself up in front of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. There have been several deaths, a Kabul police spokesman said. The exact number of victims is not yet known.
The blast took place at 4 p.m. (local time, 1:30 p.m. CET) on the street in front of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. An eyewitness also reported to the German news agency about individual shots after the explosion. Images shared on social media are said to show several people lying on the street in front of the building after the incident (see tweet below).
The AFP news agency reports a total of more than 20 victims, it is unclear how many people are killed and injured. The background to the incident is not yet known. Kabul police said investigative teams were on the scene.
