Smoke column – Vuur broke out in bus depot in Philadelphia

Date:

In Philadelphia in the US state of Pennsylvania, a fire broke out on Thursday morning (see video above) and destroyed at least 40 used buses. All buses in the parking lot were already out of use and sometimes served as a warehouse with spare parts.

The buses of the Southeasters Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (septa) had set fire to a depot in the Nicetown district around 6.15 am (local time). What caused the devastating fire is currently unclear and the subject of research.

Septa director Scott Sauer said that the vehicles parked, there were buses that have already been removed from the circulation and now have to be sold or demolished. Of the buses destroyed or damaged by the fire, 15 electrically operated models are, he said.

“When the buses are fully retired, all strength and lubricants are removed,” says Sauer. “The batteries are removed and emptied. But there were buses that have just retired and still contain fuel”. The buses that caught fire were “on the way to the scrap heap,” said septa spokesman Andrew Busch.

The smoke column above the bus depot was seen everywhere in the city. The health department of Philadelphia asked the residents to stay in their homes and to avoid the smoke as far as possible. The authority said that the first Air Goods tests showed high values of pollutants.
