In Iceland, a serious icefall occurred on Sunday afternoon in an ice cave popular with tourists. A wall of the cave collapsed and a large number of rescue workers are now on the scene. Several people are missing.
The ice cave is located at Breiðamerkurjökull, an extension of the Vatnajökull glacier. The accident occurred while about 25 people were traveling through the cave with trained mountain guides. It is unclear how many people are currently trapped.
Several missing and injured
According to local media reports, at least two missing people are still being sought, and they are believed to be tourists. Several injured people have been flown to hospitals by helicopter.
At the remote location, all available rescue workers from the Southland were brought together, as well as police, ambulance and fire trains. In the capital Reykjavik, the Icelandic Civil Protection Coordination Centre was activated.
A video on Twitter shows the entrance to the ice cave – probably not for the claustrophobic…
A spokeswoman said rescue efforts were difficult and that special equipment had been brought to the scene. There is still no official number of people affected by the accident.
