E-cigarettes, but also a ‘real cigarette’ – that is apparently very bad for your health. American scientists have now shown a fourfold higher risk of lung cancer in such cases. According to the experts, animal experimental studies also support this.
“Nicotine exposure from electronic vaping has already been shown to increase the risk of various lung injuries. “Until now, the impact of vaping on lung cancer risk was unknown,” Randall Harris of the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center in Columbus and his co-authors wrote recently in the “Journal of Oncology Research and Therapy.”
14 times increased risk of lung cancer
As part of a so-called case-control study, the scientists compared 4,975 patients diagnosed with lung cancer with 27,294 people with the same personal characteristics without cancer. The following results show how catastrophic smoking or ‘vaping’ is for your health, especially regarding the risk of lung cancer: Cigarette smokers had a 14-fold increased risk of lung cancer compared to non-smokers.
The combination of e-cigarettes and regular use of ‘real’ cigarettes increased the risk of developing lung cancer by 59 times, which represents a four-fold increase in risk compared to conventional cigarettes alone.
“Vaping” is also harmful
When the scientists statistically adjusted for any comorbidities such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), coronary heart disease, etc., the risk of such a carcinoma decreased in both groups, but the difference between cigarette smokers only and users of ‘vapers’ plus cigarettes remained the same. The difference was equally marked in men and women and applied to all different types of lung cancer.
As the American scientists write, these results from the case-control study are supported by at least two scientific studies with animal experiments: when the animals were exposed to the vapor of e-cigarettes for a year, almost a quarter got lung cancer, almost 60 percent of the animals showed precursors of bladder cancer. Damage has been shown that is caused by ‘steaming’ to the DNA repair mechanisms that protect against carcinomas.
