Russia has bombarded Ukraine with rockets, cruise missiles and drones from the air in the early hours of Monday. Observers in Kiev are calling it one of the heaviest air raids in the two and a half years of war. Several people have already been killed in the shelling of the eastern Ukrainian region of Sumy.

There were at least seven explosions in the Ukrainian capital on Monday and electricity and water supplies were partially disrupted after the attack, Mayor Vitali Klitschko announced on Telegram.

Long-range bombers and missiles
According to the official air warning app, explosions were reported in the surrounding areas of the capital and in the Zhytomyr, Khmelnytskyi, Ternopil and Lviv regions. According to the Ukrainian Air Force, the Russian army temporarily deployed 11 Tu-95 long-range bombers with cruise missiles. In addition, Kinschal hypersonic missiles were fired at Ukraine. Ukraine was also attacked from the Black Sea.

There is currently no overview of casualties and damage in the region. According to initial information, the Ukrainian energy system was again a major target of the attack.

Poland deployed interceptors
Due to the proximity of the Russian attacks to the Polish border, the Polish military deployed interceptors, the PAP news agency reported. According to reports, aircraft from other allies were also involved in the operation.

Western journalists met at the hotel
Russia had previously come under heavy fire in the eastern Ukrainian region of Sumy. Local authorities said that more than 260 attacks with various weapons were recorded in 24 hours. Four people were killed and 13 other civilians were injured. Numerous residential buildings were destroyed.

According to official reports, several Western journalists were also victims of a Russian night attack in Kramatorsk, which hit a hotel there. A security adviser for the British Reuters was killed in a hotel; his body was not recovered from the rubble until hours later, according to the authorities. Four people were rescued with injuries, as the Ukrainian governor of the Donetsk region, Vadym Filashkin, announced on Telegram.
