195 passengers on a Boeing 787 were very lucky: they were in the air for 16 hours with a damaged wing and a blown tire. Nevertheless, the landing in Perth, Australia, took place as planned.
As reported by “Bild,” the six-year-old Boeing took off from Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci International Airport on Saturday. From there, we headed – without a stopover – to Perth on Australia’s northwest coast.
As the plane accelerated on the runway, the tread on one of the Dreamliner’s tires came off. Australian airline Qantas confirmed that tire fragments had pierced parts of the plane’s right wing and a flap.
The full fuel tanks remained intact during the incident – fortunately for the 195 passengers. In addition, the damaged tire remained inflated and no air escaped.
Here you can see photos of the incident.
Engineers discovered damage
According to the report, neither the flight crew nor the passengers noticed any damage to their aircraft. The plane travelled for almost 16 hours before landing in Perth as planned – without incident and safely.
Only after landing did engineers notice the blown tire and damaged wing.
Machine takes a break
Because the damage was relatively extensive, the airline temporarily took the plane out of service. It must be examined and repaired. How long this will take is unclear.
