Grandpa has been blameless and inconspicuous up until now. But now the 71-year-old stood before the jury in Ried im Innkreis (Upper Austria). He is alleged to have abused his granddaughter and grandson. He was acquitted of one charge, but still received a heavy sentence, which is not legally binding.
The abuse allegedly began in 2009 and was targeted by the grandson, who was six at the time. The grandfather repeatedly touched the grandson’s private area. The grandfather allegedly began inappropriately approaching his granddaughter, who was seven at the time, in 2014. He groped the girl almost every time he visited.
Abused in bed
When the girl, aged ten to twelve, later slept in her grandparents’ bed, sexual acts allegedly took place there. The suspect, who allegedly committed the crimes in the Bavarian border area with the Innviertel, did not confess during the trial in Ried.
21 months partial prison sentence
At the end of the trial day, the serious sexual abuse – that is, penetration – could not be proven, but the jury found it proven that the grandfather had at least touched the grandchildren inappropriately. Therefore, he was convicted under Article 207, Sexual Abuse of Minors. The penalty is six months to five years in prison.
The 71-year-old was sentenced to 21 months in prison, seven of which were unconditional. Because neither the suspect nor the Public Prosecution Service have made any statements, the verdict is not yet legally binding.
