During his visit to Ukraine, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz received some online malice for his casual outfit on the outward journey. Unlike his colleagues who traveled with him, he wore a dark short-sleeved shirt during the train journey. The short-sleeved shirt was trending on Twitter for hours on Thursday. Users commented on whether the outfit was suitable for the Kiev trip.
Can he? Waves hit the net on Thursday after Scholz appeared in a short-sleeved shirt alongside France’s Emmanuel Macron and Italy’s Mario Draghi on the train journey to Kiev. One Twitter user immediately wrote the damning statement: “Bus drivers wear short-sleeved shirts.”
“Fashionably it can only go wrong…”
Another joked: “Also: a German next to a Frenchman and an Italian can only go wrong when it comes to fashion…” And another added: “Shameful who a short sleeve shirt wear. It gets even more embarrassing with a breast pocket and large checks. These are the sweatpants of professionals who have lost control of their lives anyway!”
However, others failed to understand the excitement over Scholz’s outfit. “Really? Are you talking about a short-sleeved shirt?” one Twitter user asked incredulously. Another teased: “When people who spend two years hanging out in their home office in sweatpants get mad about Scholz and his short-sleeved shirt. ..”
Scholz likes to travel casually
At the official appointments in Kiev, Scholz appeared in a suit and tie like the French president and the Italian prime minister.
In February, Scholz polarized the internet with a casual outfit on the run for the inaugural visit to Washington. He came to the background discussion with the journalists who traveled with him in jeans, a black T-shirt and a gray sweater.
