In 2024, two-thirds fewer migrants arrived in Italy than in the same period last year. Since the beginning of the year, 40,660 people have arrived on the Italian coast – in the same period in 2023, this was 113,778 people.
The figures were published by the Ministry of the Interior in Rome. The number of new arrivals is also lower compared to 2022: in the same period two years ago there were 55,785.
Most migrants come from Bangladesh
Most of the migrants arriving in 2024 came from Bangladesh (8,169), Syria (6,609) and Tunisia (5,565), the Interior Ministry said. In 2024, 5,044 unaccompanied minors arrived in Italy; in the comparable periods of 2023 and 2022, the numbers were 18,820 and 14,044, respectively.
Measures against smugglers have been tightened
To combat the causes of migration, the Italian government last year drew up the so-called Mattei Plan, which aims to establish a series of “equal and beneficial” partnerships with African and Mediterranean countries. The aim is to strengthen cooperation at various levels, including against human trafficking. According to the government parties, the plan shows concrete results in the fight against human trafficking.
