Storming of US Capitol – First Intruder Sentenced to 4.5 Years in Prison

Date:

A man who was the first to break into the Congressional Building during the January 2021 storming of the U.S. Capitol has been sentenced to nearly four and a half years in prison. He was also fined $2,000 (the equivalent of 1,791.63 euros).

Michael Sparks, of Kentucky, was found guilty of resisting government authority and breach of the peace (see video above). Investigators said he was the first Trump supporter to break into the Congressional Building on Jan. 6, 2021. Sparks “acted as a green light” for the protesters who followed him, a police officer said at the trial in Washington.

1500 people charged
In total, nearly 1,500 people have been charged with participating in the storming of the Capitol. Former US President Donald Trump himself is facing four counts of indictment for his role. However, it is unlikely that the case will go to trial before the presidential election in November. Trump is running again as a Republican.

On January 6, 2021, fanatical supporters of the ousted Trump stormed the Capitol in Washington after he made an incendiary speech. Congress was in session at the time. The action was intended to prevent the formal certification of Joe Biden’s election victory. At least five people were killed and 140 emergency personnel were injured.
