In the northern outskirts of the Vienna-Floridsdorf settlement, some young people under the age of criminal responsibility are planning to get into mischief – the residents are scared. But the police and the district are now reacting.
The northern suburb in the 21st district in the north of the city is actually a quiet neighborhood. But for several weeks now, young people under criminal responsibility, some of them with a migrant background, have been causing fear through vandalism and coercion.
Burning waste containers
Former district council member Hans Jörg Schimanek is also worried: “The residents here are scared. Especially children and the elderly.” In addition, waste containers regularly burn, probably due to arson. The investigation into this is ongoing, according to the professional fire brigade (MA68).
Police patrolling increased dramatically
The Vienna police are aware of the incidents in the northern settlement area and of an increasing number of complaints in this area. “For months, the Floridsdorf city police command has been maintaining an intensive exchange with various stakeholders, such as social institutions, MA 11, the education directorate and the district leaders,” it says in response to a question from “Krone”.
Police patrols have therefore been greatly expanded and young people in the northern outskirts of the settlement have been under high pressure of control in public spaces for months, as the ‘Krone’ says.
The district has also responded. Together with the housing partners of the city of Vienna and the police of Grätzel, a “legal discussion” was held. “The fact is that the police are responsible for maintaining public safety, but if you are not yet criminally liable, other mechanisms must also come into play,” says district leader Georg Papai (SPÖ).
More police officers in Floridsdorf
The legal possibility must be created to implement measures that restrict the freedom of young people who have not yet reached criminal responsibility, as part of a socialization program. The district head also calls again for more police officers in Floridsdorf. “From 2025, we will use the district budget to finance our own mobile fair play team, which will be deployed specifically in hotspots to identify and manage conflicts like the one we are experiencing now,” says Papai.
