A cute monkey – this is not a pet! An illegally kept baby Barbary macaque has now been taken from its owners in Upper Austria. They had not kept it in a species-friendly manner and the animal will continue to have a hard time in the future.
Neighbors had reported to authorities that a baby monkey was being held near Linz. In a birdcage! During an inspection, the approximately one-year-old monkey was actually found – wearing a breastplate and diapers. Alone, without peers.
“Not experiencing normal behavior”
“The animal is a strictly protected monkey. At this time it is especially important that he feels comfortable in his new environment and can relax. We will then ensure that we find companion animals for the baby monkey. Unfortunately, that won’t be easy, because he was hand-raised, separated from his family and therefore never experienced normal behavior,” explains animal shelter manager Stephan Scheidl of the Vösendorf animal shelter in Lower Austria, where the monkey now resides.
Upon arrival, the small exotic animal was immediately thoroughly examined by the specialized monkey keepers of the Vösendorf animal shelter and the first necessary medical care was provided. “Our focus now is to give the monkey as much rest as possible. Even though he has grown up with people, encounters with unknown people are associated with an enormous amount of stress,” the animal rights activist adds.
Posture is in principle allowed
In Austria, Barbary macaques can in principle be kept, but only if the necessary CITES papers – which show that the animal legally comes from a breeder – are present, the monkey is registered and is kept in a species-appropriate manner. None of this applied to the baby monkey, who does not yet have a name. It is unclear what will happen to him next. The animal rights activists will try to place him with another group of monkeys, but this may be difficult due to the lack of socialization.
