DNA analysis shows: Small robber ate an alpaca in Upper Austria

Date:

Llamas are considered a good defense against wolves; they get in the way of predators. Now a dead and eaten alpaca – a llama relative – has been found in the Mühlviertel. Suspicion immediately fell on the wolf. But according to the DNA test, it was a smaller predator that feasted on the carcass.

Things have become calmer around the wolves in Upper Austria. After twenty reports in November, there have been only three so far in December: two dead deer in the Mühlviertel – in each case a DNA sample was no longer possible – and one sighting in Dimbach. At the end of November, a dead and eaten alpaca was found in St. Georgen am Walde. The genetic analysis is now here and only fox tracks have been detected.

As is known, a risky wolf was killed in Bad Kreuzen at the beginning of December; it was the second authorized and officially ordered shooting of a wolf in Upper Austria.
