European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has called for an expansion of nuclear energy in light of the current global political situation.
“When it comes to our energy, we have to generate our own energy,” she said at the Globesec security conference in Prague. This requires more renewable energy generation, more nuclear power and more efficiency.
“Safety assumptions are in ruins”
“In the Ukrainian cities, many of our fundamental security assumptions are in tatters,” she said. For decades, many people have said that economic integration is the true source of security, and Europe has bought Russian gas. “This was supposed to be the guarantee that Moscow would never start a new war on the old continent,” von der Leyen said. “But that was a mistake.”
The CDU politician did not say in her speech whether she also considers a return to the use of nuclear energy in Germany to be appropriate. EU countries such as France, Hungary and Poland are currently working on expanding nuclear energy. In Germany, the last nuclear power plants were decommissioned in April 2023.
