A shooting at a church in a suburb of one of Alabama’s largest cities left two people dead and two others injured on Thursday, police said.
The shooting took place at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Vestavia Hills, a suburb of Birmingham. Captain Shane Ware of the Vestavia Hills Police Department said several police officers rushed to the crime scene after a call was received at 6:22 p.m. reporting an active gunman.
Three people were hit by the gunman, two of the victims died. “One person is being treated at a local hospital for an undisclosed injury,” Ware said. He added that a suspect is in custody and that “there is no danger to the community at this time.”
Rev. Kelley Hudlow, an Episcopal priest in the Diocese of Alabama, told WBRC the church and community were stunned by the shooting.
“It’s shocking. St. Stephen’s is a church built on love, prayer and grace and they will come together,” she said. “People of all faiths come together to pray and hope for healing.”
Numerous law enforcement and emergency services were on the scene and emergency services and fire engines with flashing lights blocked the road to the accident site.
