Vorarlberg’s first “renewable city sign”, which was only put up two days ago, has already disappeared: unknown people stole it on Saturday evening – and left a message on a pizza box.
Just two days ago, the municipality of Hard in Vorarlberg proudly presented its new city sign: it is made of bamboo and Accoya (a modified wood, note) and comes from sustainable forestry. But now the sign has disappeared; strangers stole it on Saturday night and left a smeared pizza box in its place.
It says: “No hard feelings. It will grow back anyway. Lustenau 88er’s” Two things are now problematic: on the one hand, mayor Martin Staudinger (SPÖ) naturally reacted with dissatisfaction to the theft: “We received many positive reactions to the new city sign, even from abroad. Now it is gone, a serious theft that endangers road safety.”
On the other hand, the number 88 is common in neo-Nazi circles because it stands for “Heil Hitler.” Therefore, Staudinger announced, the Office for the Protection of the Constitution would now also investigate the matter.
In any case, next week the stolen sign will be replaced, again with a “renewable one,” Staudinger explains.
