Could Become a Typhoon – Philippines: Tropical Storm Causes Deaths

Date:

Tropical Storm Yagi has caused severe flooding and landslides in the Philippines. According to the civil defense, at least 10 people have died so far: five of the victims were buried under mud, including a pregnant woman. Four people, including two small children, drowned in the floods. Another victim was electrocuted.

At least 10 other people were injured in landslides, the report said, with people in some parts of the country having to wade through chest-high water or be rescued from their homes by boat.

Air and ship traffic restricted
The greater Manila area was also affected, with school classes partially suspended. Several domestic flights were canceled for safety reasons, and shipping traffic was also suspended, especially in eastern and central parts of the country, according to the Coast Guard.

According to the National Weather Office, “Yagi,” which is called “Enteng” in the Philippines, is expected to strengthen significantly through Wednesday. “It could also reach the upper category of a typhoon on Thursday or Friday,” the report said.

Average of 20 typhoons per year
The Southeast Asian island nation is hit by an average of around 20 typhoons each year. In July alone, more than 30 people died in the aftermath of Typhoon ‘Gaemi’. The worst storm to date, ‘Haiyan’, killed more than 6,300 people in November 2013.
