At the beginning of June, a zebra foal was born at the Schönbrunn Zoo in Vienna. The Burchell stallion weighs about 30 kilograms and is cared for by his mother for about eight months. “The birth of zebras usually goes very quickly, after about 15 minutes it is over,” says zookeeper Gregor Hirsch.
At birth, everything went very well with the offspring, “the young animal is doing well,” says Hirsch. He is now exploring the facility and occasionally nibbling on the hay with the rest of the herd. All this happens “yet close to his mother”.

The natural range of the Burchell zebra is the African savanna south of the Sahara. The animals are best known for their distinctive stripe pattern. “The Burchell’s zebra has a long tradition in Vienna. This species has been part of the permanent animal population at Schönbrunn Zoo for more than 80 years. Characteristic of the Burchell’s zebra are the lighter ‘shadow stripes’ between the distinctive black stripes. Each zebra has its own pattern, members of a family mainly recognize each other by smell,” explains zoo director Stephan Hering-Hagenbeck.
