In fact, after the success of the Kalush Orchestra in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest, Ukraine should be the next venue for the singing competition. The European Broadcasting Union EBU has now said “with regret” that this is not possible. Instead, it appears that it is the turn of the second seeded player from Turin.
In a sober communiqué, the EBU announced that the Ukrainian broadcaster UA:PBC was not allowed to host the ESC. Due to the “current circumstances”, the necessary safety and performance guarantees could not be given.
Security “cannot be guaranteed”
The EBU thanked the Ukrainian broadcaster for its cooperation in the weeks since the clear victory over ESC 2022 in Turin. They “share the sadness and disappointment” that the competition cannot be held in Ukraine next year.
“UA-PBC cannot guarantee the security and guarantee that a television station must provide to host, organize and produce the Eurovision Song Contest under the rules of the ESC,” it said on Twitter on the Ukrainian television channel.
Britain should help
Talks will now be started with the BBC to secure the event, the statement said. Singer Sam Ryder finished second for Great Britain in Turin. This would make the British the first choice to host the ESC. However, Ukraine’s victory should definitely be “reflected” in the 2023 shows, it said.
