Because of “treason” – Russia: 15 years of prison camp for scientists

Date:

A leading Russian scientist has been sentenced to 15 years in prison on charges of “treason”. According to Russian media, Alexander Shiplyuk allegedly passed on information about supersonic weapons to representatives of other states.

A Moscow court on Tuesday found researcher Alexander Shiplyuk guilty of “betraying state secrets.”

The director of the Christianowitsch Institute of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics in Novosibirsk, Siberia, was arrested in the summer of 2022 and has been in custody in Moscow since then. His trial was held behind closed doors. According to TASS, the 57-year-old pleaded not guilty.

Colleague sentenced to 14 years in prison
In May, a colleague arrested around the same time as Shiplyuk was also sentenced to 14 years in prison for treason. According to Russian media reports, he was accused of passing classified data on Russia’s supersonic missile program to German intelligence.

Since Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Moscow has intensified its crackdown on scientists. In total, at least three more scientists from Novosibirsk have been arrested since then.
