A major operation by the Vienna professional fire brigade is currently causing huge traffic disruptions on the A4 near the Erdberger Bridge. The reason: Sulphuric acid leaked from a tanker.
The fire brigade is currently on site with 14 vehicles and numerous employees in protective suits and is pumping away the liquid after the first safety measures. The ÖAMTC expects delays until the evening.
The eastern motorway towards Vienna-Schwechat airport has been closed since 1:30 p.m. The exit from the Südost Tangente (A23) towards the south to the A4 is also closed, the automobile association said.
This quickly led to significant traffic jams, both on the A23 towards the south and on the A22 towards the A23 from the Kaisermühlen tunnel and at Handelskai, from the A23 exit to the A4 exit, Simmeringer Haide.
ÖAMTC: Still closed for hours
Road users will probably have to give way a little longer in large areas. “The closure is expected to last for hours,” said a spokesperson for ÖAMTC. The reason for the fluid leak is still unclear.
