After cases of bird flu were detected in various wild birds in Vienna and Lower Austria around the turn of the year, Salzburg is now also drawing the consequences.
According to AGES, the Ministry of Health will make stables mandatory for poultry farms with more than 50 animals in the coming days.
This concerns the state capital and the following 16 municipalities in Flachgau: St. Georgen near Salzburg, Bürmoos, Lamprechtshausen, Dorfbeuern, Nußdorf am Haunsberg, Berndorf near Salzburg, Seeham, Mattsee, Obertrum am See, Göming, Oberndorf near Salzburg, Anthering, Bergheim, Wals-Siezenheim, Anif and Elsbethen.
“All poultry farmers in the state of Salzburg, especially those near open water, are being made aware of the increased risk. We strongly recommend that you comply with the general hygiene and biosecurity measures known from the bird flu regulation. The exact measures for the amendment of the bird flu regulation will only be announced by the Ministry of Health,” said Josef Schöchl, Director of Veterinary State.
No infections with the H5N1 virus have yet been detected in humans in Europe. For poultry, however, infection with this pathogen often means death.
