The findings of an Irish government-commissioned inquiry into sexual abuse cases in Catholic schools over the past decades are “shocking”, according to Ireland’s Education Minister Norma Foley. The report found that there were almost 2,400 allegations of abuse at more than 300 religious schools across the country.
It was the first time the scale of the abuse had come to light, Foley said in Dublin on Tuesday.
Half of the perpetrators are already dead
The 2,395 allegations relate to 884 different alleged perpetrators at day and boarding schools that were previously under their command or are still under their control. The allegations date back to the 1970s; about half of the alleged perpetrators are believed to be deceased.
The study examined 73 religious orders that had or still had schools in Ireland. 42 religious orders had records of allegations of past sexual abuse and provided the information. The study looked exclusively at schools of Roman Catholic institutions.
