French President Emmanuel Macron has decided to appoint the conservative Michel Barnier new prime minister of the country. The former minister and former European commissioner is known for his participation in the Brexit negotiations.

The Elysée acknowledged this in a statement It was “an unprecedented cycle of consultation” in which Macron, in the interests of his “constitutional duty”, has tried to achieve a candidate and a government that will achieve this. to gather the largest possible support in Parliament.

Barnier is now being called upon to form a cabinet that can gain the support of the National Assembly, which has been marked by polarisation following parliamentary elections in July.

Barnier’s inauguration will take place this afternoon at 4:00 p.m. (14:00 GMT) at the Matignon Palace, the official residence of the head of government.

Barnier, 73, will become the oldest prime minister of the Fifth Republic, replacing the youngest prime minister to hold the post, Gabriel Attal, who took office last January at the age of 34.

The appointment comes after two weeks of intense political consultations by Macron and as Saturday marks two months since the second round of parliamentary elections, which left a National Assembly without a clear majority and deeply divided.
