A flood disaster caused severe damage in North Korea in late July. Leader Kim Jong-un then announced severe punishments for those responsible. Now, scores of officials have been executed.
According to a report by South Korean TV channel TV Chosun, up to 30 officials were executed in August for alleged failures before the flood disaster. Accordingly, provincial governors were said to be among those executed.
Floods killed 1,500
South Korean media reports say up to 1,500 people have died in severe flooding in North Korea. State news agency KCNA said more than 4,000 households were affected and nearly 3,000 hectares of farmland was damaged along the border town of Sinuiju, near China.
Kim ordered severe punishments
In August, ruler Kim Jong-un, who visited the flood-affected areas, admitted serious mistakes in the preventive disaster management. North Korea is considered particularly vulnerable to flooding due to the high rate of deforestation of its forest areas. Kim ordered the authorities to severely punish those who neglected their responsibilities.
Castling of the staff indicated a wave of purges
At the same time, Kim appointed a new public security minister, Pang Tu Sop, and a new party leadership for the flood-hit North Pyongan province, KCNA reported. The staff smoking was part of a wave of purges that led to the executions in late August.
Increasing number of public executions
Executions of officials and ordinary citizens are not uncommon in North Korea. Before the Covid-19 pandemic, about 10 public executions were carried out each year, according to Business Insider. Since then, they have multiplied to about 100 per year, according to the Korea Times. The increase in the number of executions of juveniles is particularly striking.
