Years of resistance – The US Congress publishes Trump’s tax documents

Date:

A US congressional committee released the tax documents of former President Donald Trump online on Friday. It shows that Trump paid little or no federal income tax for years, despite bragging about his wealth.

The published documents cover the years 2015 to 2020. Sensitive data such as social security numbers have been made illegible. As reported, the majority of congressional committee members voted to make at least parts of Trump’s tax records public. Among other things, the Democrats wanted to check whether the documents of the real estate entrepreneur revealed any conflicts of interest and whether he had used questionable methods to save taxes.

“Numerous reports have revealed that the former president engaged in aggressive tax strategies and decades of tax avoidance strategies due to the complexities of managing his personal and business finances,” the commission noted. In early December, Trump’s tax documents were turned over to the Finance Committee.

Legal remedies for years
Since Trump never made his tax returns public either as a presidential candidate or after entering the White House, critics have long suspected he had something to hide. Trump had defended the publication through legal means for years, and finally failed in the Supreme Court a few weeks ago. Speaking to the Truth Social network, he opined that the tax records say nothing about his “great company” with “some of the largest assets in the world and very little debt.”

The 76-year-old, who wants to run again in the 2024 election, is currently facing several legal issues, including a dispute over classified documents found at his home in Mar-a-Lago, Florida.
