Shock in Neumarkt – From inconspicuous neighbor to terrorist attacker

Date:

The home community of Emrah I. – the Munich shooter – is in shock. A major operation took place in his parents’ home. His neighbors are astonished that a young man from Flachgau could become so radical just a few houses away.

Swimming weather in Neumarkt am Wallersee. During the local inspection of the “Krone” on Thursday afternoon, everything in the city was quiet. The residents had no idea that a major operation involving dozens of police officers, rescue workers, firefighters and an explosives team would take place shortly afterwards in the quiet residential area in the Sighartstein district.

Suspicion of explosives led to an operation in the parents’ home
Suddenly the area is cordoned off, people are evacuated, the police are patrolling in front of a house. It is the parental home of Emrah I. – the 18-year-old Salzburger with Bosnian roots who was shot by the police hours earlier in an assassination attempt in Munich.

The radicalized man was probably aiming at the Nazi documentation center and was stopped just in time by the emergency services. The license plate of his car, which he had parked in the center of Munich, led the officers to Neumarkt.

“We are shocked. In general, that something like this happens. But even more so about the fact that this person would have lived in our neighborhood. “It is a very uncomfortable feeling,” says resident Sven Reyer. So far, hardly anyone has noticed the suspected terrorist attack. The settlement where he lived is fairly new and consists of elegant single-family homes with a garden. No one had thought that a young man would become so radicalized behind the walls.

But there were clear indications: Emrah I. became known to the police in February 2023 after he became violent at his school. When he dangerously threatened and injured a classmate, the then 17-year-old was also accused of participating in a terrorist organization. There was a suspicion that Emrah I was religiously radicalized, active online and interested in explosives and weapons. The Salzburg Public Prosecutor’s Office started an investigation, but ended it in April 2023.

With fatal consequences, as it turned out. The well-known interest in explosives and weapons was ultimately the reason for the large-scale operation in the parental home. Salzburg police chief Bernhard Rausch explains: “Looking back, there was never any danger to the residents. But we take this very seriously and of course proceed with great care. That is why we secured and cordoned off a large area.”

In Neumarkt, it is difficult to understand the thwarted act of violence by a fellow citizen who ultimately had to pay with his life. “The place is in shock and it shows how quickly terrorism can emerge in our midst,” says Mayor David Egger-Kranzinger.
