An 81-year-old testifies to age discrimination and a lack of customer service at his bank in Burgenland. When he wanted to do his banking after 2 p.m., he could no longer enter the foyer of the bank.
Branch closed, account blocked, hotline busy: financial transactions with the bank have become an ordeal for many customers. Older people in particular complain about the arrival of the digital age in banking. This also applies to Günter Klimesch from Rattersdorf. He can now only laugh about the age discrimination, “but then denying his customers access to the bank so that they can no longer hand in their payment receipts on site is the last straw,” says the 81-year-old, dismayed about the recent incident at his bank, BAWAG in Oberwart.
“I have never experienced anything like this in 72 years.”
“I have been a customer of the bank for 72 years, previously at Postsparkasse (PSK) and now at BAWAG,” says Klimesch, “but such impudence has never happened to me in all that time.” When he wanted to do his banking in Oberwart on Saturday, he found himself in front of closed doors.
And this despite the fact that the bank’s foyer should actually be accessible 24 hours a day. “The bank’s headquarters on Main Street is currently being renovated and the doors in the alternative neighborhoods apparently close at 12:00,” says the elderly man angrily. To vent his anger on the spot, he picked up a ballpoint pen and even left an angry message on the door. “I could have saved myself the trip to Oberwart, 33 kilometers away. “This bank can no longer make a name for itself with customer friendliness,” says Klimesch angrily.
Bank did not comment on the incident
He too was outraged by the reaction of the employees after he had contacted the branch by phone after the weekend. BAWAG itself did not respond to the incident when asked.
