Early Saturday morning, the sirens blared on the Markt Neuhodis. A roof structure on the main street was on fire. The fire brigade was present with more than 80 emergency workers. The father in the house was saved, but for his son all help came too late.
Newspaper delivery woman discovered fire
The fire was discovered around 4:50 a.m. by a newspaper delivery person. The witness raised the alarm. A few minutes later, the fire brigades of Rechnitz, Markt Neuhodis, Dürnbach, Althodis and Pinkafeld arrived with 12 emergency vehicles and drone support from the air.
The owner of the house was rescued by the helpers and brought to safety. After initial treatment, the C3 crew flew him to the hospital in Graz. His son was also brought out by the fire brigade. Despite all attempts to revive the burned victim, the man could no longer be saved. Shortly after six o’clock in the morning, the helpers lost the battle for his life.
The cause of the accident is unclear. Fire investigators are expected to go to the scene this morning to look for clues. The fire is believed to have been caused by negligence.
