Reinhold Messner celebrates his 80th birthday on September 17. On the occasion, he spoke to the “Krone” about wishes, death, the recent “different constellation” in his private life and what extreme actually means to him, the man of extremes.
To loosen things up a bit, we asked Reinhold Messer a few quick questions at the beginning of our interview, namely…
Mr. Messner, how are you today?
I am happy, healthy and with a woman I feel comfortable with.
Do you collect anything?
I have spent my whole life collecting: intellectual property, art, mountaineering relics. Collecting is a disease.
Have you ever done anything forbidden?
Often drove too fast.
What was your last bad purchase?
Maybe an art object. If we can do a certain project, it was a good purchase, if not, it was a bad purchase.
What do you never want to live without?
About the possibility to create. Close. To be creative.
What is the best part of the day for you?
More in the evening than in the morning.
Are you afraid of heights?
No, but that can come with age.
After a short “warm-up” we gratefully accepted this answer, which amounted to an invitation to deepen the conversation on precisely the subject of age and how he already felt about it!
