The sap of the Titicaca giant frog in South America is said to be a remedy for asthma and bronchitis. And “Telmatobius culeus,” native to Peru and Bolivia, is said to have aphrodisiac properties. That’s why the amphibians popularly known as “Viagra frogs” are on the brink of extinction. Over the past two decades, the species’ population has declined by as much as 80 percent due to traffickers, climate change, and pollution.

Now the remaining animals are more sought after than ever before. The juice that increases sex drive is produced as follows: the frogs are killed, skinned, and then an extract is made to drink.
There is a risk of fines of up to 13,000 euros
Peruvian authorities recently seized a total of nearly 400 of these sought-after frogs. They were in a box on a truck traveling from Bolivia to Lima, the capital of Peru. The animals were confiscated. Trading frogs is a criminal offense in Peru. There is a risk of fines of up to 13,000 euros.
