The gas boilers in two kindergartens in Vienna-Favorit are being renovated. The reason for this: Conversion to district heating is too complex and time-consuming. The climate roadmap will probably not come out that way.
The city’s climate strategy, according to which Vienna must be climate neutral by 2040, clearly means: stop with gas. Thomas Kohl, ÖVP district councilor in Favoriten, was all the more surprised by an extract of the MA 10 departmental proposal for the 2023 budget draft in Favoriten. It contained two budget items related to the replacement of gas boilers. The kindergarten and out-of-school care centers at Bernadottegasse 59 and Lippmanngasse 3 in the 10th arrondissement are affected.
MA 34 explains it as follows: “Short-term action is needed to ensure the supply of the kindergartens. Since a conversion to district heating or alternatives would jeopardize the operation of the kindergarten due to the long lead times (planning, purchasing and implementation of the building measures on the building), the rapid installation of a modern, energy-efficient gas boiler was the solution.”
“It is more than clear that the city lacks an appropriate and forward-looking strategy. Otherwise action would have been taken much earlier to prevent this situation. While private housing is obliged to stop installing gas heating from 2024, the city of Vienna will install new gas boilers by 2023! It’s grotesque,” District Councilor Kohl said.
