According to official figures, the number of homeless people in London has risen by almost a quarter due to the rising cost of living. According to an analysis by local authorities, 5,712 people were living on the streets in the British capital between April and September. That is 24 percent more than in the same period last year. The number of unreported cases is expected to be significantly higher.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan called on the government to take immediate action to tackle rising bills and housing costs. Among other things, he called for a rent freeze and a ban on short-term evictions.

Since 2016, 13,500 people have been helped out of homelessness, eight in ten people permanently. But the extraordinary financial pressure is putting the poorest in London at risk, Khan said. “We are still seeing a vicious cycle of people becoming homeless as a result of this escalating cost of living crisis.”
