After the suspected terrorist attack in downtown Munich, investigators have interviewed about 100 witnesses to the crime, a spokesman for the Bavarian State Criminal Police said. The Karolinenplatz Special Commission (Soko) has not yet found any further evidence for the investigators’ “working hypothesis” that the 18-year-old Austrian shooter acted out of Islamic or anti-Semitic motives, the LKA spokesman said.
The approximately one hundred Soko officials hoped to gain more insight into this from the evaluation of the Austrian’s mobile phone. The device was apparently damaged during the firefight with the police, but could be repaired. How much data can still be read is still unclear, according to the LKA spokesman.
Israeli Consulate General and Nazi Documentation Center Shelled
According to police, the 18-year-old, who last lived in Salzburg’s Flachgau, fired nine shots in downtown Munich on Thursday with a Swiss Wehrmacht carbine, including at the Israeli consulate general and the Nazi documentation center. The shooter died after a shootout with police.

Suspect is likely to have been radicalized in an Islamic manner
The Munich Public Prosecutor’s Office assumes a terrorist attack, partly because of the location near the consulate and the date, the anniversary of the 1972 Olympic attack. Findings by the Austrian police showed that the 18-year-old could have become radicalized into Islam.
The Salzburg Public Prosecutor’s Office had investigated him last year for being a terrorist organization (§278b StGB). His mobile phone was confiscated after he had dangerously threatened classmates and caused bodily harm. During house searches, videos with Islamic propaganda were found. According to the investigators, however, the offense of participation in a terrorist organization was not met.
