Heart Surgery – Emergency Surgery: Harvey Weinstein Admitted to Hospital

Date:

Once-powerful Hollywood movie mogul Harvey Weinstein, who is in prison as a convicted sex offender, was taken to hospital and underwent surgery for a health emergency.

The former movie mogul has been transferred from his notorious Rikers Island prison in New York to a hospital, the 72-year-old’s attorney Arthur Aidala has confirmed.

It is still unclear how serious Weinstein’s condition is. According to his lawyers, he has serious health problems, including a heart condition. Several American media reported on the hospitalization and that the emergency heart procedure was performed.

Weinstein, once all-powerful in Hollywood, was sentenced to 23 years in prison in 2020 for sex crimes in a historic trial — the numerous attacks on women he was accused of having largely sparked the MeToo movement.

A verdict that was surprisingly overturned
In late April, a New York appeals court surprisingly overturned the verdict due to procedural errors. The prosecution announced its intention to reopen the trial. The trial has been tentatively set for November 12.

Despite the overturned New York verdict, Weinstein will remain in prison because he was sentenced to 16 years in prison in 2023 in a separate criminal case in Los Angeles that also involved sex crimes. His lawyers are also challenging that verdict.

Milestone in legal history
The first Weinstein trial was a landmark in legal history. Since 2017, more than 80 women have publicly accused Weinstein of sexual assault. The ex-producer has always denied any guilt and claimed that the sexual acts were consensual.
