The Australian government plans to only allow children and young people over a certain minimum age to access social media in the future. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese spoke of an age range between 14 and 16, but without making a specific decision.
A corresponding bill is expected to be introduced in parliament this year. Social networks such as Facebook, Instagram and TikTok are a “plague” for children, the politician said.
The Albanians did not specify how access should be technically controlled. The government is currently investigating different methods of age verification. The prime minister stressed that he wants children to have a carefree childhood. Social media harms social development and prevents children from making real friendships and experiences. “Parents prefer to see their children on the football field than on their mobile phones – and so do I,” the 61-year-old added.
“Enough is enough”
The safety and mental and physical health of young people must be the top priority. “Enough is enough,” he said. Social media and digital platforms must live up to their social responsibility.
According to reports, an example of the nationwide push is a similar initiative in the state of South Australia, where access to social networks will only be allowed from the age of 14. Parental consent will also be required for 14- and 15-year-olds.
Social media harmful: government must intervene
Networks like Facebook, Instagram and TikTok should therefore take measures to prevent children from having access to them. As with cigarettes and alcohol, the government should intervene if a product can harm children.
