When the fire brigade arrived, flames were shooting out of the restaurant windows! Six asylum seekers were injured in a fire at their accommodation, a former inn in Schönau im Mühlkreis (Upper Austria), at 1 a.m. on Tuesday. Ten others escaped unharmed. 14 fire brigades were deployed.

“When we arrived, flames were coming out of the windows of the former restaurant of the Oberndorfer inn. The restaurant and two outbuildings were completely engulfed in flames. “Six asylum seekers were injured and were taken to hospitals with suspected smoke inhalation,” reports Roman Pointner, commander of the FF Schönau im Mühlkreis. According to the mayor, five men had already been released on Tuesday morning. A total of sixteen asylum seekers were housed in the old inn, apparently all young men.

The fire was not extinguished until 5:15 am.
From 00:53 more and more fire brigades from the district were alerted to the large fire and a total of 14 fire brigades were present. It was not until 05:15 that the word “fire out” was finally announced.

The cause of the fire is still unclear
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The source of the fire was definitely in the old restaurant.

The now homeless asylum seekers were temporarily housed in the parish hall by the community. New accommodation is now being sought for the 16 refugees, because the former hostel is no longer habitable.
