Last weekend, a dangerous incident occurred during a military exercise in a forest near Friesach (Carinthia). A 68-year-old hunter suddenly fired a shot from her rifle because she felt threatened by people in camouflage clothing.
Law enforcement officers were called to the woods around 9:30 p.m. Friday. The 68-year-old had fired a shot with live ammunition — whether she was aiming at the soldiers or shooting into the air was not yet clear and is under investigation.
Exercises will continue
On closer inspection, the reason for the threat was innocent: the people were German soldiers from the Special Forces Command (KSK) who were currently conducting an exercise. Michael Bauer confirmed this to the “Krone”. There is currently no further danger.
Gun ban imposed
The hunter was at least temporarily banned from carrying weapons. The exercise has been taking place since last week in the St. Veit district, with soldiers from the Austrian Army Hunting Command and members of the KSK taking part.
The exercise had already been carried out several times in Carinthia and this time too it was duly reported by the Federal Army to the district administration of St. Veit. According to Bauer, the planned exercises will continue until the end of the week until further notice.
