At least one person has been killed in a serious fire at a chemical factory in Shanghai. The fire at the Sinopec Shanghai Petrochemical plant broke out around 4 a.m. local time on Saturday morning. The fire was under control by mid-morning.
According to local media reports, the fire at the chemical plant caused an explosion that could be heard six kilometers away. Users posted videos on the online networks showing large clouds of smoke. One of the videos showed fires in three different buildings.
Hundreds of emergency services battled flames
More than 500 people have been deployed to bring the blaze under control, according to the Shanghai Fire Department. The cause of the fire was unclear at this time. According to state broadcaster CCTV, the Ministry of Disaster Prevention has sent a team of experts to the chemical plant.
After two and a half months of corona lockdown, many factories in Shanghai did not reopen until early June. The Chinese economic metropolis was hit by a microwave wave in the spring. At the beginning of April, the authorities then rigorously closed down the city.
