Is US President Joe Biden now switching sides? Images from an event to commemorate the victims of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, give rise to this assumption. Donald Trump’s team has already thanked them for their “support”. But appearances can be deceiving.
The video of a smiling Joe Biden wearing a red cap with the words “Trump 2024” at a fire station quickly spread on social media. But how did this happen? At a 9/11 memorial service attended by firefighters in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, the head of state met a die-hard Trump supporter who, of course, also wore the matching outfit, including a red cap.
Trump fan to Biden: ‘I’m proud of you’
Biden got into a conversation with the older gentleman, the two joked about their advanced age and suddenly convinced each other to swap hats. “Do you want an autograph from me too?” the Trump fan asked, to laughter from the other attendees. The president refused, but then tried on the red cap. “I’m proud of you!” his counterpart responded.
The White House later said Biden had accepted the offer “in the spirit of unity” on this important day in the US. Biden also met Trump personally that day during the traditional ceremony where the names of the victims of the terror were read out. Vice President Kamala Harris was also present.
