Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia had launched a counteroffensive in the Russian border region of Kursk. This response by the Russian military “is in line with the Ukrainian plan,” Zelensky said at a press conference in Kiev on Thursday, without giving further details.
The Russian Defense Ministry said on the online service Telegram that Russian units had “liberated ten settlements within two days” in the Kursk region.
Russian counterattack not surprising
The Russian counteroffensive was expected after Ukraine made a surprise advance into the area earlier.
During this offensive, Kiev captured more than 1,000 square kilometers and captured many Russian soldiers. The aim of the action was to force Moscow to at least partially withdraw soldiers from the eastern Ukrainian region of Donetsk to cover the Kursk region.
